Alumni and Padgate Old Students Association members with Professor Peter Harrop, Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor and
Provost of Warrington Campus
Students past and present, as well as the local community, enjoyed a day of celebration at the Warrington Campus on Saturday (May 30).
In celebration of 65 years since the Department of Education recognised Warrington Campus as an institution for teacher training, the local community were also invited to come along and see what the Campus has on offer.
Activities included the opportunity to take a look at the new Institute of Policing whilst testing detective skills, a fascinating in-depth talk by the NHS retirement fellowship about how nursing training and practice has evolved, as well as a bouncy castle, slides and Disney Princesses for our younger visitors (or young at heart!).
Talking of young at heart, a special afternoon tea was held for members of the former Padgate Old Students Association (POSA) and leavers from the 1950s onwards, who enjoyed reminiscing about  student life over a cream cake or two.
The POSA group also enjoyed a screening (pictured right)  in the state-of-the-art North West Media Centre  of Padgate Memories, a 35-minute documentary produced and directed by Senior Lecturer in Media, Wayne O’Brien.
The film chronicled the establishment of the Padgate Training College, and featured interviews from alumni and former staff, a number of which attended the screenings. The film prompted even more memories for the alumni, including one who pointed out that it was not only the local community and bus drivers that knew the former RAF site as ‘Canada Hall’ in the early days, but in later years lorry drivers would also instantly know the name ‘Padgate’ when young students were hitch hiking cross country!
The eldest alumna in attendance was Phyllis ‘Phyl’ Custerson, class of 1952 and now 92 years young. She said: "I have always enjoyed meeting up with my fellow Padgate alumni, and I am delighted to still be able to make it here to see everyone. Padgate has stayed in my heart my whole life. Here’s to the next 65 years!"
Alongside the celebration ran the Old Boys/Girls sporting tournament – you can read a report of this event here.
