Great tales told at University Yarns event

The former College School at the Parkgate Road Campus of the University of Chester was the venue for this year’s University Yarns.  This was part of the Essar Chester Literature Festival, where members of the public, former staff and alumni were invited to drop in and share their memorabilia such as photos, books, leaflets and impersonations for an afternoon of fond memories.

Held on Saturday, October 25, the venue proved poignant for many, as there were several participants who had been pupils at the school from as early as 1939 to the mid 1950’s.  Everyone agreed that they enjoyed their time at the school, but felt that the level of discipline was very harsh.

Local alumnus, John Evans who lives in Hoole and was a pupil at the school between 1953-56, shared some of his photos, many of which illustrated his competitive spirit and achievements in sport which led to a career as a professional footballer.

Former College and University staff reminisced over inspiring characters they had worked with and how these individuals shaped the progress of the institution.  The arrival of women in 1961: the reluctance of one Principal to allow women students compared to the liberalizing management style of a later Principal.

In previous years, the English Department has hosted Handbridge Yarns, Hoole Yarns and Blacon Yarns. It seemed very appropriate to host one at the University of Chester, as it celebrated 175 years since it was founded.
